Summer is for reading

By scottcampbell | July 21, 2009

Although you might not know it from the weather, the calendar on the wall says summer is here. That must mean it’s time for summer reading! Whether you need books from your school’s required reading list or you’re just reading for fun, check Langdon Library first — we may be small, but that just means we try harder to get you what you need. And kids, check it out: You can earn prizes just for reading the books you were already going to read!

Barnes & Noble: Read 8 books, win a free book!

Stratham Fair: Read and win free admission to the fair!

TD Banknorth: Read 10 books and earn 10 bucks!

NH Fisher Cats Baseball: Hit the Books with the Fisher Cats; read 5 books and earn 2 tickets to a game!

Portland Sea Dogs Baseball: Show us your reading list and pick up a ticket voucher!

Stop by for your reading entry form packet soon, because there are deadlines for these prizes.

Our summer reading program is a-la-carte and on-your-own — you can pick and choose which prizes you want to try for, and you don’t have to be here on a certain day or at a certain time to participate. But we do have a few special guests lined up. For example, we’ve already had a special visit from Fungo, the Fisher Cats mascot. He stopped by and listened to baseball stories (Casey at the Bat and 86 Years: The Legend of the Boston Red Sox) with more than a dozen Newington kids (and an iguana). Your librarian even challenged Fungo to a little Wiffle Ball! Click on the Flickr box (see it on the right?) for all pictures, and watch the Calendar page of this web site for more special reading-related events.

And remember, a book is a great way to brighten a rainy summer day!
