Closed for Renovations

By scottcampbell | September 10, 2009

As you may already know, Langdon Public Library will close to the public for the week of Saturday, September 12th through Saturday, September 19th for renovations. The library will re-open at its usual hours on Tuesday the 22nd at 3PM.

In these renovations, our historic 1892 building will get an updated, ADA-compliant unisex bathroom. The existing restrooms were installed in 1969. (If you’ve seen them, you know they are *not* retro-chic!) The library will also have new laminate flooring installed in the stacks by the side entrance to replace the worn and cracking tile. (For the less-than-flattering “before” pictures, see our Flickr photostream.) The work will be done by Coastal Remodeling LLC of Rochester, who also built the library’s side entry “dog house” in 2007.

The new renovations continue an active year of improvements for Langdon Library. The library trustees have had new, energy-efficient overhead lighting installed, including period-appropriate “schoolhouse” lights in the main room. In addition, extensive and long-overdue tree work was done around the building, new storm windows were installed, trim was painted, a new lawn was planted, and a memorial bench was dedicated out front. The library remained open during these previous improvements but must be closed while the bathrooms are out of commission. The library hopes impact to the patrons will be minimal. Any checked-out items due back during that week may be renewed online, or returned in the book-drop, or simply kept for an extra week. Although the library does not impose fines for late items, we will be accepting any long-overdue or damaged items, no questions asked, during the “amnesty week.”

In addition, volunteers are being recruited to help unshelve and reshelve books to clear space for the new flooring. Volunteers can help out either weekend; contact us for more information.
