Summer Reading Program 2021: Tails & Tales

Thank you to Hauch Storage, Dover Bowl, The Beach Plum, and Beswick Engineering for sponsoring this year’s Summer Reading Program!

Reading Logs

Upon signing up for the Summer Reading Program, each child will receive a folder which contains a reading log, stickers, an animal bracelet, an animal bookmark, and a calendar of events. You may download additional copies of the reading log to print here or pick one up at the library.

Participants track each day they read by putting a sticker on the corresponding date square. They can visit the library to have a staff member sign off on their reading days. Participants receive 1 (one) raffle ticket per day read.

Adults can sign up at the library and receive a Summer Reading Program bookmark. They will receive 1 (one) raffle ticket per book read. Adults can bring their bookmark to get their raffle tickets anytime during library open hours.

Get those tickets in the raffle jars by our final day, August 14! Winners for both raffles will be drawn on Monday, August 16.

If you need another children’s reading log, click here to download and print one.
If you need another sheet of bookmarks (teens and adults), click here to download and print one.

Outdoor STEAM Programs (ages 6-12)

JULY 8: Hexbug Hijinks
Incoming grades K-3: 11 AM
Incoming grades 4-6: 1 PM

Attendees will create 3D mazes for hexbug and marble races. We’ll have cardboard and other recycled materials to experiment with so participants can practice many different designs and scenarios.

JULY 15: Jumpin’ Jellyfish (ages 6-9)
Incoming grades K-3: 11 AM
Today we’ll learn cool facts about jellyfish! Our underwater friends can camouflage and shapeshift to adapt to their nautical environment. We’ll read a story about a jellyfish and make our own out of a paper bowl, colorful tissue paper, and sparkly ribbon.

JULY 15: Cool Chameleons (ages 10-12)
Incoming grades 4-6: 1 PM

Some animals have an incredible talent: they can change color! In this program, participants will learn about some of the amazing creatures which use camouflage to adapt to their environment. We’ll read Eric Carle’s The Mixed Up Chameleon and then create a color-changing chameleon of our own with colorful paint and paper plates.

JULY 22: Slitherers & Slimers
Incoming grades K-3: 11 AM
Incoming grades 4-6: 1 PM

Join us on the library lawn for a totally disgusting (but super fun) hands-on exploration of simulated animal secretions. Participants will try their hand at making oobleck and play a game to guess the slime-making animals.

JULY 29: The Most Awesome Pet (ages 6-9)
Incoming grades K-3: 11 AM
Morning session attendees will be asked to put their creativity and imaginations to the test. Think about the coolest pet you know – or you can imagine one! What is his or her name? Can he or she do tricks and how does your pet play? What does he or she look like? Participants can use all sorts of fun recycled and craft materials to create their pet and even make a frame for their creation.

JULY 29: Create a Creature (ages 10-12)
Incoming grades 4-6: 1 PM

Today’s activity is all about animals in their habitats. Each team will be given a series of animals who live in a particular habitat and will be tasked with designing their own creature based on the characteristics and living habits of those animals. At the end of the program, teams can present their creations.

AUGUST 5: Firefly Magnets (POSTPONED TO AUG. 12, SAME SESSION TIMES)
Incoming grades K-3: 11 AM
Many creatures who come out at night or live in dark environments have the ability to produce their own light. Today, we are going to make our own glow-in-the-dark firefly magnets out of clothespins, pony beads, pom poms, and pipe cleaners.

AUGUST 5: Firefly Paper Circuits (ages 10-12) (POSTPONED TO AUG. 12, SAME SESSION TIMES)
Incoming grades 4-6: 1 PM

Today is all about the flickering firefly and the ominous anglerfish. Learn cool facts about bioluminescent creatures and build simple circuits out of copper tape and a small battery.
